Jeju Plants

I've been spending a lot of my vacation time hiking. Jeju is a relatively small place, and when you hike around a bit, the scenery can seem a bit repetitive at first glance. As I hike more, my focus has changed from trails themselves to the plants and scenery that surround the trails. A few weeks back I went hiking with some local Korean friends and they would stop every five minutes or so and comment on a plant of some sort. They would say that one is a good plant in soups, or another plant might be a good medicine. One of the plants we would even pick the flower and suck the juice out of it! Before, it all seemed like this mass of green, but when you look more closely the individualism of the forest comes out.

Hallasan from Min Oreum (near Jeolmul Oreum)

I'm back to hiking oreums. Lately the weather has been super cloudy and humid every day. I thought I'd put a picture up to remind me of the blue skies that will come one of these days.

This picture is from the area around the Jeolmul Recreational Forest. There's a great hiking loop that connects three or four oreums all in the same vicinity including Jeolmul Oreum and Min Oreum. The trail is a great combination of improved trails preventing erosion from high traffic, but retain a very natural feel. The forest in this altitude of Jeju is quite dense and has some amazing plant life.
